Excerpt from Saint Peter and the First Years of Christianity
I have been requested to introduce the present volume to the English-speaking public, and I gladly do so, in the persuasion that it will be welcomed on all sides as a valuable addition to our religious literature.
In a previous work the gifted author gave us a most happy presentation of the Life of Our Lord. In this book he undertakes to describe the first beginnings of the (christian) Church.
No subject, after the Gospel narrative, could be more grateful to the Christian reader. There is none which the thoughtful student approaches with a keener interest, for it is the opening of the great era Of human history, and of that higher form of life which the Whole civilized world gradually came to accept as its ideal, and to which it has never since ceased to pay homage.
Unhappily, our sources of information regarding the early days Of Christianity are very imperfect, being almost entirely confined to the Acts of the Apostles. 62 But under the intelligent guidance of Abbé how much may be gathered even from so short and fragmentary a narrative With all the varied informa F 4 tion and cultivated tact of an historian, he adds to the clearness and consecutiveness of what we knew before.

This book is a hard read. It is a translation of from German and contains a lot of German words and a lot of Greek. It is heavily footnoted and this interrupts the continuity of the reading but does help a lot in interpreting the text. My church is using it as a Sunday School text and I am one of the teachers. The book is hard to use this was since it not a chronological biography of Peter but a discussion of his life based on what we can glean from his teaching and beliefs in the scripture. Since a lot of what we know of Peter comes from the letters of Paul and early Acts and since this material deals with disagreements with Paul and Paul's disagreements with James, a lot of the book deals with Paul and James. Anyway this a good book gleaning a lot of information by a careful reading of Matthew, Mark, early Acts,, Gal,,James and some Apocrophal books. I reccommend it but expect a difficult read. This book is for those with deep interest not for the casual reader. RADProduct details

Saint Peter and the First Years of Christianity Classic Reprint Constant Fouard 9781333988685 Books Reviews
I enjoyed this book. Most writers about St. Peter beat around the bush and do not talk about Peter the man. This book does. The language can slow your reading pace a bit, but that is what dictionaries are for.
Excellent history. Very documented
Excellent summary of the first years of Christianity. At times a little wordy
but still a good resource for the beginner.
I love to read books about our Saints.
